About John Clare Cottage
John Clare Cottage is the home of one of England’s most cherished poets, John Clare. Nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Helpston, near Peterborough, our historic cottage is a place of inspiration, heritage, and discovery. Here, we preserve the legacy of John Clare, often celebrated as the “Peasant Poet” for his unique, powerful voice capturing rural life in the 19th century.
The cottage, which dates back to the early 18th century, provides a glimpse into Clare’s world. With beautifully restored rooms, a tranquil garden, and an engaging museum, visitors are transported back to the landscapes and language that inspired Clare’s remarkable poetry. The John Clare Trust manages the cottage and relies on the passion and commitment of volunteers to keep Clare’s legacy alive.
By volunteering with us, you’ll have the chance to connect with like-minded people, engage visitors from all walks of life, and contribute to an important cultural project. Whether you enjoy welcoming visitors, helping with educational programs, maintaining our gardens, or supporting events, there’s a role for you here. Join us in celebrating Clare’s heritage and help us share the beauty of his words with the world.
