Role
The purpose of the role is to provide a great customer service by preparing and serving food to visitors at community hub managed by bpha. You will need to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills by ensuring all visitors are greeted with a warm and friendly welcome.
You will be expected to support visitors who may have food intolerance's and serve clients who may have difficulty making hot beverages or transporting their meals to a table.
You will also need to be mindful of minimising hazards, to prevent burns or trips or contamination of foods which may cause serious illnesses to a person intolerant of food allergens.
The role is very busy and rewarding working with other volunteers providing nutritious community meals in a friendly and safe environment for visitors from preschool age to older adults.
Previous experience of working in a communal kitchen not necessary but you should have some experience of cleaning, cooking and preparing meals.
Responsibilities
· To sanitise surfaces, ensuring food areas are safe.
· Lift lidded storage boxes and carry to store room.
· Prepare and serve hot foods recording holding heats to be more than 62 degrees.
· Able to proficiently use kitchen knives to chop, peal, chop and prepare fruit and vegetables.
· Keep storage boxes sanitised and kept in good order with ingredients and kitchenware.
· Washing up, drying up and collecting plates, bowls, cutlery from tables.
· Help customers to prepare self-serving foods or beverages where needed.
· Mopping and sweeping the kitchen areas as required
· Keep kitchen clean and tidy at end of use.
· Neatly put away all utensils, cooking instruments, dishes, and cutting boards in their respective places
· Discard food waste and empty bins and using recycling waste appropriately.
· Storing ingredients and food items according to food safety standards.
· Check sell by dates and discard wasted foods safely.
· Complete all mandatory training and bespoke training courses including food safety level 2 and allergen course.
Skills
· Can demonstrate good customer care ensuring visitors feel valued.
· Able to demonstrate sound knowledge of proper food handling procedures.
· Able to correctly lift storage boxes from the storeroom.
· Able to stand for several hours.
· Able to receive instruction from kitchen lead where appropriate.
· Can use kitchen appliances safely.
· Can demonstrate good organisational skills.
· Able to follow all food health and safety regulations and display exceptional organizational skills to ensure the timely completion of kitchen duties.
Requirements
· Enhanced DBS check. We can provide this if you do not have a valid certificate.
· To pass food safety level 2 certificate and allergen course
· To work one session before officially starting your role. We will ask some informal questions to see how you are getting one before making a final decision to officially start volunteering with us.
· Complete all mandatory training guidelines before starting work
