"It’s fantastic to see and be part of something that truly makes a difference."

Volunteering offers numerous benefits to both individuals and the community.

Alright Mate, a men's peer support group based in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, provides volunteer opportunities for men over the age of 18 who want to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of local men.

They do this by volunteering as many Monday evenings from 6pm - 8pm as they can, to facilitate a small number of men sharing a safe space, usually chatting over a warm drink. I say usually, as occasionally we head over to the nearby Fenland Orchards Project and have a drink around a campfire – there are often marshmallows and other nibbles available too. Both events are well attended and some nights we host other services, sharing stories about how they can help local people too.

Craig Freestone, a dedicated volunteer with Alright Mate, shared his reasons for getting involved: "I wanted to help those who needed a little bit of support or just someone to be there for them." He highlighted the importance of the group, saying, "Men don’t always speak out, and this is a great place to be on a Monday evening with like-minded people."

During his time volunteering, Craig has observed that many of the men who attend or show interest in the group have faced personal difficulties. He appreciates the safe and welcoming environment Alright Mate provides, helping to make those challenges a little easier to handle. Beyond his work with the group, Craig frequently participates in other well-being events, finding fulfilment in giving back to the community.

For Craig, one of the most rewarding aspects of Alright Mate is offering reassurance to those who need it whether through a familiar face or simply knowing there is someone they can trust.

Founded at the start of this year, Alright Mate continues to grow, welcoming new members to each session. The positive feedback and consistent attendance from regular participants highlight the group's impact. As Craig puts it, "It’s fantastic to see and be part of something that truly makes a difference."

If you're looking to be part of a supportive community and help improve men’s well-being, Alright Mate is always open to new members and volunteers. The induction process was simple with all our volunteers, undertaking a DBS check and some training on being a facilitator, which was delivered by CPSL Mind charity.

'Alright Mate Wisbech' is the Facebook page with over 130 members since it started in January 2025 which just goes to show how popular and much needed this group is to the local area.

Why not join Craig and volunteer? Alright Mate is truly changing lives.
